Overland AI, a Seattle-based company specializing in off-road vehicle autonomy for the defense sector, has secured $10 million in seed funding.

The round was led by Point72 Ventures with participation from Shasta Ventures, Ascend VC, Pioneer Square Labs, Voyager Capital, and Cubit Capital. This funding will enable Overland AI to expand its workforce, focusing on top engineering talent, and to advance the development and testing of its OverDrive software. OverDrive is a vehicle-agnostic solution designed for autonomous navigation of off-road terrain in any environmental condition at speeds up to 45 mph.

The U.S. Army and Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) recently awarded Overland AI an $18.6 million ceiling prototype Other Transaction (OT) agreement to adapt its technology for autonomous vehicles in complex, contested terrains. Additionally, Overland AI is participating in Phase II of the DARPA RACER program to further develop and demonstrate OverDrive’s capabilities in operationally-relevant environments. These demonstrations include integration with heavy tracked and lightweight wheeled vehicles.

Co-founder and CEO Byron Boots emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing ground vehicle autonomy for national security and reducing risks to warfighters. Boots, also a professor of Machine Learning at the University of Washington, has a long history in off-road autonomy research and has collaborated with the U.S. Army Research Lab and DARPA over the past decade. The funding will accelerate the development of high-performance ground autonomy software designed for uncrewed vehicles in contested terrains.
